NCSAM 2016: The basic steps to online safety and security

Blueliv is proud to be supporting National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2016. NCSAM is celebrated every October and marks a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online.

This week the NCSAM champions have one simple message: Stop. Think. Connect.

Stop: check the sites you’re using are secure

Think: consider the consequences of your actions online

Connect: enjoy the internet!

More and more of our lives have become digital, and it’s essential to remember how much value is attached to the personal information we use every day online. Usernames and passwords are the most common form of information compromised online and everyone is a potential target – the cyber crooks take no prisoners.

Phishing and social engineering techniques are the most popular methods used by cybercriminals to distribute and execute malware designed to steal credentials. From keystroke loggers to web injects; the type of malware developed and deployed is constantly mutating, but the objective never changes.

Educating employees, customers, friends and family on how to identify scams and avoid identity theft or information loss is fundamental in a world where we rely so heavily on being connected. Organizations have a real responsibility to protect customer, colleague and company information; all of which contributes towards safeguarding their reputations and ability to do business.

Network security solutions traditionally operate internally to mitigate the risks of data being leaked from the inside out. However, the majority of these risks originate from outside an organization’s network perimeters, including phishing attacks, hacktivist operations and malicious mobile apps. This is why we need a twofold approach to keeping information safe online, combining internal measures with external threat intelligence.

We as individuals also need to be conscious of maintaining our own online reputations and apply similar tactics to the ones described above, remembering to Stop. Think. Connect. whenever we’re online. Take steps to avoid your information getting into the wrong hands; use strong, unique passwords for each of your online accounts and avoid using corporate email addresses to set up personal accounts. And keep one eye open for attempts to compromise your personal data; check before downloading free versions of paid apps and be alert to the signs of phishing attacks.

Take a moment to read NCSAM’s mantra about Our Shared Responsibility, we think it’s pretty cool…

We lead Internet-connected, digital lives. From our desks and homes to on the go, we work, learn and play online. Even when we are not directly connected to the Internet, our critical infrastructure—the vast, worldwide connection of computers, data and websites supporting our everyday lives through financial transactions, transportation systems, healthcare records, emergency response systems, personal communications and more—impacts everyone.

Cybersecurity is the mechanism that maximizes our ability to grow commerce, communications, community and content in a connected world.

The Internet is a shared resource and securing it is Our Shared Responsibility. Our Shared Responsibility is once again the theme for National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2016.

No individual, business or government entity is solely responsible for securing the Internet. Everyone has a role in securing their part of cyberspace, including the devices and networks they use. Individual actions have a collective impact and when we use the Internet safely, we make it more secure for everyone. If each of us does our part—implementing stronger security practices, raising community awareness, educating young people or training employees—together we will be a digital society safer and more resistant from attacks and more resilient if an attack occurs.

Blueliv believes that sharing information, intelligence and expertise strengthens our defenses against the continuously evolving threat landscape that shapes our online experiences at home and at work every day.
